Review: The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan

The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

I’d heard so many great things about The Royal We, but I wasn’t sure whether I would like it. Sure, I love Julia Stiles’ The Prince & Me and The Princess Diaries, but I didn’t follow the romance of Prince William and Kate Middleton at all. I remember thinking people were crazy for taking off from work to watch their wedding.

Well, I’m so glad I gave this book a chance because I loved it! The romance between Bex and Nick was totally adorable. I especially loved their early days at Oxford. And I thoroughly enjoyed all of the drama between Bex and her twin sister, Lacey, from Lacey trying to date Nick’s brother, Freddie, to her book deal based on Bex’s fashion choices.

I listened to this book on audio (Overdrive), and it was terrific. Despite the long length of this book, I was genuinely sad when it ended. I wanted more about Bex and Nick…and everyone else.

The characters in this book were so well developed. I felt like I was reading about real people. They were very complex – and not just the main characters. The issues between Bex and Nick had so much more depth than I was expecting. It wasn’t just about Rebecca being an American. They both made some mistakes and had to be forgiven.

At the start of the novel, you know Rebecca and Nick are getting married and that something has happened with Lacey to make Bex mad. But then it backs up and follows their romance chronologically across many years. Knowing where they’d even up took away some of the suspense, but it also allowed me to enjoy the nuances of the relationships – the main romance, the friendships, and the family drama.

This book was the perfect balance of plot and character development. I really, really enjoyed it.

American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it's Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain's future king. And when Bex can't resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face.

Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become.

Which is how she gets into trouble.

Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she's sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

    1. Sorry for kind of making fun of people like you then. I loved the book, and I probably would love the real life story too if I’d been paying attention. I just never take the time to watch the news or read magazines. I’m too busy with books!

    1. It was just so fun! And so much deeper than I was expecting. I was very surprised. It’s so long, and I was so leery of the plot. The audio was really great though, and that helped it fly by.

  1. I’m hankering for a reread now. I loved how the characters felt so much like real people. It was one of those books where, even when I set it down, I felt like they were out there somewhere living their lives. Glad you enjoyed it so much!

    1. Yes, me too! I kind of miss them. I think I will listen to it again at some point. I want it to be a movie. I want to see them come to life.
