I loved the premise of Alienated: an exchange program for teens between Earth and a newly discovered planet, L’eihr. Cara has been selected to host one of three L’eihr students coming to Earth. And then next year she’ll take her turn on L’eihr. Of course Aelyx is gorgeous and feelings develop.
Many humans aren’t happy with the presence of aliens on Earth. The next level of racism and discrimination abound in this book, from threatening notes to outward protests. I really disliked that part of the plot. Cara loses her boyfriend and her best friend over housing Aelyx. It was pretty realistic, but it was too painful to read.
This book started off being pretty good, but about half way through it got a little too angsty and ridiculous. Aelyx had a secret plan to sabotage the alliance between Earth and L’eihr, but I think I missed the why of that whole part of the plot.
The first in a series, which I will not be continuing, Alienated wasn’t what I was hoping for. I listened to the whole thing on audio at 1.25 speed, so maybe I missed things, but it seemed like it jumped around a lot. I kept feeling lost in the plot.
I don’t know. I’ve said it before. I need more than a slow-burn romance to hold my attention. I just didn’t love this one.

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them. Handpicked to host the first-ever L'eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she'll have inside information about the mysterious L'eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara's blog following is about to skyrocket. Still, Cara isn't sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L'eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn't seem more alien. She's certain about one thing though: no human boy is this good-looking. But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class. Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn't just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life-not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.
