My Reading Personality

My Reading Personality

A couple months ago, in preparation for the release of her new book Reading People, Anne Bogel (aka Modern Mrs. Darcy) released a Reading Personality Quiz. I love quizzes, and I love personality typing, hence the reason I was super excited to read Anne’s book (which I will be reviewing on August 30th).

I have been a long time listener of Anne’s podcast What Should I Read Next?, and even before that I loved her literary matchmaking blog posts. I have fantasized about what books I would share as my favorites if I ever go on the show. And I have tried to type myself the way Anne always seems be able to do with the guests on the show. I know I love books with a lot of action, but also decently developed characters. And…

The Escapist

…this quiz pegged me as “The Escapist”. Here’s the description from the email I received back in June:

If you’re an Escapist, you believe that above all, reading is supposed to be FUN. You read because you enjoy it, but also because it helps you relax, especially when your real life feels crazy. You especially appreciate a book that feels impossible to put down.

Umm, yup! That’s me to a tee. I shared my result on Facebook, so maybe you already saw this, but it prompted my sister and my mom to also take the quiz, and their results seemed pretty spot on as well.

The email also included some book recommendations for Escapists, which were quite accurate:

The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan (Loved it! 4 Stars)
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom (Loved it! 4 Stars – Actually re-listening to it now.)
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (Loved it! 4 Stars)
Cafe by the Sea by Jenny Colgan (It’s on my TBR list.)
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (Probably would love it, but I’m intimidated by the length.)

More about the personality types

While Anne doesn’t talk about her Reading Personalities in her book, she does have an online “class” (really more of a webinar) about the 7 reading personality types. It dives into each type a little more deeply, complete with more book recommendations for each type.

You can buy this class for $15 in Anne’s shop, or you can get it for free if you pre-order Reading People: How Seeing the World through the Lens of Personality Changes Everything before it comes out on September 19th.

  1. I got “The Explorer” – The Explorer knows that a reader lives a thousand lives. This type enjoys experiencing a world of possibilities and firmly agrees that reading builds empathy. Explorers are thoughtful about what they read next. They are likely to get their book recommendations from their fellow readers and sometimes fellow travelers, the issues of the day, and their own research.

Sounds pretty accurate to me! Thanks for sharing this!
